Story Circles

A story circle is a structured engagement technique to promote deep listening and productive conversation.

Story circles can be easily integrated into community councils, coalitions, or public gathering meetings. Hosting a story circle follows a set list of instructions to convene individuals, ask a question, and allow each member of the group to share their answer to the question.

If the goal of the story circle is to inform a planning process or foster collective action, it is important for the facilitator to add additional time during the “cross-talk” component and develop questions that help participants think through how to move from critical reflection to critical action. For example, “What have we learned from these stories about what we do well and where we may be falling short? How might we act on what we have learned today?”
